If someone needs oxygen for longer, they belong in a hospital or a hyperbaric chamber anyway, and you coordinate that with a dive physician, for example via the hotline.

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=”4.27.9″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_column type=”4_4″ _builder_version=”4.16″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.27.9″ _module_preset=”default” hover_enabled=”0″ global_colors_info=”{}” sticky_enabled=”0″]

The one exception: panic and hyperventilation

There is exactly one situation in diving where oxygen doesn’t help: a panic attack with hyperventilation. Panic attacks are relatively common and can be triggered by critical situations while diving—for example, if someone thinks they ascended too fast.

Anyone who is hyperventilating breathes off too much CO₂. That sends false signals to the brain and causes symptoms that are easy to confuse with a diving accident: tingling in the hands, shortness of breath, dizziness.

There’s enough oxygen. What the body needs right now is CO₂—so calmer, slower breathing.

Help the person calm down: talk to them calmly, stay with them, and breathe slowly together with them.

Panic can cause symptoms—but it can also be the reaction to a real diving accident. Both can happen at the same time. So “they’re just scared” is not an all-clear.

If a diving accident is a possible cause, don’t delay giving oxygen just because you don’t have a definite diagnosis yet. Stay with the person and get medical support.

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=”4.27.9″ _module_preset=”default” column_structure=”1_2,1_2″][et_pb_column _builder_version=”4.27.9″ _module_preset=”default” type=”1_2″][et_pb_button button_text=”Previous page” _builder_version=”4.27.9″ _module_preset=”default” button_url=”@ET-DC@eyJkeW5hbWljIjp0cnVlLCJjb250ZW50IjoicG9zdF9saW5rX3VybF9wYWdlIiwic2V0dGluZ3MiOnsicG9zdF9pZCI6IjE4ODg0IiwiZW5hYmxlX2h0bWwiOiJvZmYifX0=@” _dynamic_attributes=”button_url” hover_enabled=”0″ sticky_enabled=”0″][/et_pb_button][/et_pb_column][et_pb_column _builder_version=”4.27.9″ _module_preset=”default” type=”1_2″][et_pb_button button_text=”Next page” _builder_version=”4.27.9″ _module_preset=”default” button_url=”@ET-DC@eyJkeW5hbWljIjp0cnVlLCJjb250ZW50IjoicG9zdF9saW5rX3VybF9wYWdlIiwic2V0dGluZ3MiOnsicG9zdF9pZCI6IjE4OTA2IiwiZW5hYmxlX2h0bWwiOiJvZmYifX0=@” _dynamic_attributes=”button_url” hover_enabled=”0″ sticky_enabled=”0″ button_alignment=”right”][/et_pb_button][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][/et_pb_section]

Administering oxygen — am I allowed to do that?
