If you want to take an SSI diving course, you’ll almost always need the appropriate digital course materials. You can book this SSI Digital Kit from us—even if you’re not planning to come to La Palma later.

You learn the theory online, at your own pace and with the peace and quiet that’s sometimes missing on vacation. Afterwards, you can take your SSI account and the appropriate course materials to any SSI dive center of your choice and complete the practical training there.

Maybe you’ll train with us later on La Palma. Maybe in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Egypt, Thailand, or somewhere else entirely. That’s completely fine. You can still prepare the theory beforehand with Punkfish Academy and take it to any SSI center worldwide.

And yes: We’re a site for diving theory. That’s exactly why we don’t just sell you an access code—we try to present the material in a way that helps you truly understand what you’re learning.

What is an SSI Digital Kit?

An SSI Digital Kit is your digital course material for an SSI diving course. You get access to the official SSI content, work through the theory online, and can use it to prepare for your course.

Depending on the course, this also includes an online exam. For theory-only specialties, the course can be completed entirely online. For courses with a practical component, the Digital Kit is the theoretical preparation—you complete the dives afterwards at an SSI dive center.

What’s important: The material is linked to your SSI account. So you don’t carry it with you as a paper folder, but in your SSI profile. That’s exactly why you can prepare at home and continue working with a suitable dive center later.

Why do the theory beforehand?

When you take a diving course on vacation, you usually want to dive. Not sit in front of a screen for hours, clicking through exam questions while already looking out at the ocean.

Doing the theory beforehand can therefore make a lot of sense. You can read at home, watch videos, review things again, and ask questions before getting in the water. On-site, you’ll then have more mental capacity for buoyancy, equipment, buddy contact, ascent, stress, and all the things you can’t learn by clicking.

That doesn’t mean theory is more important than practice. You learn to dive in the water. But you go into the water much better prepared when you’ve already understood what it’s all about.

Entry-Level Courses: SSI Course Materials for Your Start in Diving

When you’re thinking about learning to dive, a common question comes up: Do I take the entire course on vacation? Or do I prepare the theory at home and use the time on-site for the dives?

What’s better for you depends on how you learn, where you want to travel, and how much time you have on-site.

On vacation, you’re usually more relaxed, right by the ocean, and your mind might be more on fish than exam questions. That’s exactly why it can make sense to get the theory done beforehand. You book the appropriate SSI Digital Kit from us, work through the material online, and then decide where you want to do the practical training.

Prepare for your Next Diving Experience Online

Your first diving certification isn’t the end. Actually, it’s more the point where things get interesting.

Maybe you want to dive deeper, go in the water at night, explore wrecks, improve your navigation, or finally understand why buoyancy sometimes looks so easy yet still feels like magic. For many of these SSI Specialties, you’ll of course need practical dives later. But you can prepare the theory beforehand.

You get the appropriate SSI Digital Kit, work through the content online, and can ask questions if anything remains unclear. For some topics, we have additional Punkfish materials, videos, explanations, or tools that help you not just check off the theory, but truly understand it.

If your specialty requires dives later, you complete these at an SSI dive center of your choice. With us on La Palma, at home, on vacation, or wherever suits you.

Your Individual Diving Experience: Specialties

Every diver is different – and that’s why there are many different ways to gain new experiences underwater that match your exact interests. SSI offers a truly wide array of Specialties from which you can choose what you enjoy most.
Are you looking for depth and love challenges? Deep, Decompression Diving, Scooter, Night could be your courses. Is safety particularly important to you? Navigation, Stress&Rescue, and perhaps perfecting your buoyancy again could help you progress. If you are interested in dive theory and the many Ecology courses, you will find a wide range of options on the page with the theory specialties.

SSI Theory Specialties: Completely Possible Online

Some SSI courses can be completed entirely online because you don’t need to learn new skills in the water. That doesn’t mean they’re unimportant—quite the opposite.

Nitrox is the best example of this. Underwater, you don’t do anything fundamentally different, but you need to understand which gas you’re breathing, which oxygen limits apply, and why analysis and planning aren’t Deco-Deco-Deco nerdiness, but a safety foundation.

Science of Diving, Altitude Diving, Computer Diving, Equipment Techniques, and many Ecology courses can also be prepared or completed online as theory specialties. This is exactly where Punkfish Academy is quite at home: We like diving theory. Not sterile, not as exam torture, but as a tool that makes diving more understandable.

Extended Range: Theory for Technical Diving

When dives become more demanding, theory becomes more important. Not because you need to overthink everything, but because planning, gas management, decompression, equipment, and team procedures suddenly forgive far fewer mistakes.

If you’re preparing for Extended Range, Gas Blender, or other technical topics, you can book the appropriate SSI Digital Kit from us and tackle the theory at your own pace. That way, you won’t arrive at your course later with a mountain of learning material, but with initial questions, organized fundamentals, and significantly more mental capacity for the practical training.

  • If you don’t have an SSI account yet, you register with SSI.
  • After your order, we’ll activate the material for you. This is done manually, so not always in the same second. We might be diving.
  • You work through the theory online.
  • If questions come up, you contact us.
  • Depending on the course, you take your exam online or go to an SSI dive center of your choice for the practical training.

FAQs – What else You might Want to Know

Can I buy an SSI Digital Kit from you even if I never come to La Palma?

Yes. You can book your SSI Digital Kit from Punkfish Academy and prepare the theory online, even if you do the practical training later at another SSI dive center.

Can I go to any SSI dive center with the materials?

Basically, you work with your SSI account and the corresponding course materials. For the practical part, you need an SSI dive center or an SSI instructor who offers the respective course. If you’re unsure, it’s best to clarify this beforehand with the center where you want to dive later.

Is a Digital Kit already the complete course?

That depends on the course. Theory-only specialties can be completed entirely online. Courses with water skills additionally require practical dives. The Digital Kit is then your theoretical preparation.

Do I have to do the theory before vacation?

No. But it’s often more relaxed. You can learn at home in peace and don’t have to work through course materials in the evening on vacation while outside, the ocean, food, and sunset provide very convincing counterarguments.

What’s different about Punkfish?
