Description
Who knows the story of lionfish taking over in some regions of the world because they don’t belong there and have no natural predators?
Invasive species are one of the most current and important topics in (marine) ecology. Such invaders can transform entire habitats in a very short time, sometimes with catastrophic consequences for the environment, the economy, and not least for (diving) humans. What are these invasive organisms and where do they come from? What role do humans play in their spread? And can we fight or manage these invasions?
In our own Punkfish course on Invasive Species Ecology, we take a global look at invasive species—not just the best-known example of lionfish. We discuss which control methods can make sense, and when caution is needed.
In our SSI Invasive Species Ecology course you get:
- Our webinar on the topic
- Our own materials
- Exam and certification as a Unique Specialty included
- a competent point of contact for all questions
Our course differs from the general SSI Invasive Species Management course. We continue to run it as an Ecology Specialty, as a theory-only course. That’s because in our region hunting and spearfishing with scuba gear is prohibited and, locally, absolutely not sensible.
To complete the course, you need an SSI account. If you don’t have one yet, you can register here: SSI Registration – Punkfish Diving
Unfortunately, this course cannot currently be selected as part of the Marine Ecology package. It is a purely online course and can be certified without any dives.
