SSI Invasive Species Management

Who knows the story about lionfish taking over in some regions of the world because they don’t actually belong there and have no natural predators?
Invasive species are one of the most current and important topics in (marine) ecology. Such invaders can transform entire habitats in a very short time, sometimes with catastrophic consequences for the environment, the economy, and not least for (diving) humans. What are these invasive organisms and where do they come from? What role do humans play in their spread? And can we fight or manage these invasions? In the SSI course “Invasive Species Management”, we present and discuss these questions using some current examples. Of course, the focus is especially on the Canary Islands.

Our course differs from the standard SSI course: we continue to conduct it as an Ecology Specialty, specifically as a theory-only course. This is because hunting and spearfishing with scuba equipment is prohibited in our region and makes no sense locally.

We will unlock the course within the next few hours after your order. You work through it and get in touch if you have any questions. At the end, you must take the exam online. Once you have passed, you will receive your certification from us.

Unfortunately, this course cannot currently be selected as part of the Marine Ecology package. It is a purely online course and can be certified without any dives.
