Invasive species are one of the most current and critical topics in (marine) ecology. Such invaders rapidly transform entire habitats, sometimes with catastrophic consequences for the environment, economy, and, not least, divers. What are these invasive organisms and where do they come from? What role does humanity play in their spread? And can we combat or manage these invasions?
This is precisely what the SSI Equipment Specialty on invasive species is about, primarily focusing on lionfish hunting. If you’re less interested in spearfishing and more in ecology, you’ll find that in our Unique Specialty “Invasive Species Ecology.”

Since hunting and spearfishing with diving equipment is prohibited in our region and absolutely not practical locally, the dives for this course must be conducted in one of the few places worldwide where it is permitted. We will gladly transfer your course materials to the center of your choice.

Unfortunately, the SSI course sheds a very one-sided light on invasive species—it lacks breadth and depth.
The custom-made webinar is different: you immediately notice the instructor’s solid expertise and a clear through line. The topic is explained comprehensively, addressing not only the management of animal species but also taking a self-reflective look at humans.
It would be desirable for this valuable content to be incorporated into the SSI course in the future to enhance it accordingly.

Der SSI-Kurs beleuchtet das Thema invasive Arten leider sehr einseitig – es fehlt an Breite und Tiefe.
Anders sieht es beim eigens erstellten Webinar aus: Hier erkennt man sofort das fundierte Fachwissen des Dozenten sowie einen klaren roten Faden. Das Thema wird umfassend erklärt, wobei nicht nur auf das Management der Tierarten, sondern auch selbstreflektierend auf den Menschen eingegangen wird.
Wünschenswert wäre, dass diese wertvollen Inhalte künftig auch in den SSI-Kurs einfließen, um ihn entsprechend aufzuwerten.
